Paul W. Allen has taught band, handbells, chorus, and general music at James Rutter Middle School in the Elk Grove Unified School District, Elk Grove, CA for over fourteen years, and has been a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) for three years. For fifteen years, he was Director of Choirs at Prince of Peace (American Baptist) Church, Sacramento, where he founded and conducted The Chancel Choir and The Bells of Peace. He is also a current graduate student in music composition at California State University, Sacramento.
He has written music for band, handbells, recorders, chorus, string quartet and many other media. He has also collaborated with Chuck Myer in many cantatas and musicals, published under their own title ALLEN/MYER MUSICALS. He is a trombonist with the American River College Symphonic Band, and a member of the Sacramento Recorder Society, contributing original works annually to their December meetings. His dozen published handbell compositions have been distributed by AGEHR, Inc., Laurendale, National, and Bronze:FX.
Paul and his wife Susan have coordinated the annual Spring Ring in Sacramento for fourteen years, sponsored by the Sacramento Area Handbell Directors Association. At their tenth gathering, a commissioned work composed by Mr. Allen was given its premiere, SONORE SONNETTE: A SYMPHONY FOR HANDBELLS (in three movements with brass quintet, voice, and timpani).
